Without regular brushing and flossing your teeth can begin to break down and eventually form cavities. A cavity is permanent damage to your tooth’s enamel that needs to be treated by a dentist. Dentists may perform several procedures including a fillings and cleaning, but in some cases it may require a root canal.

Symptoms

Cavities are a form of tooth decay that manifest themselves in several ways, the most common of which being:

  • Toothaches
  • Tooth sensitivity especially when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold
  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth
  • Brown, black or white staining on any surface of a tooth

If you experience any of these symptoms you should schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately.

How Cavities Form

Cavities are among the world’s most common health problems, and are especially common in children and young adults.

If your diet includes lots of snacking, sweets or sugary soft drinks you increase the likelihood of developing a cavity.

Development begins in the nooks and crannies of your mouth where it’s easy for food to get caught and stay. Without treatment it will eventually reach the root of your tooth, with pain and discomfort increasing along the way. Unfortunately once a cavity has been formed there is no way to fix it without a visit to the dentist.

Treatment and Prevention

The best way to deal with cavities is to not get them in the first place. Your mouth will thank you for the extra precautions and care you take to prevent tooth decay, including:

  • Brush every morning and evening
  • Floss once a day
  • Use mouth wash (consult with your dentist to see if this is a good fit for you)
  • Get fluoride treatment from your dentist.

The above advice are helpful habits to be in no matter the current state of your mouth, it unfortunately won’t fix damage that has already occurred.
