Fillings

A filling restores a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When Dr. Thomason gives you a filling, he first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with tooth colored filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling helps prevent further decay. Ultimately, the best dental filling is no dental filling. You can dramatically decrease your risk of cavities and other dental diseases simply by:
- Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Flossing daily
- Eating a balanced diet
- Visiting the dentist regularly
What Causes Cavities?
Cavities are caused by acids and bacteria that are formed from the stuff we eat. Some things cause cavities easier than others. A particularly dangerous one is sugar. When eating candy, or other sugary treats, it is best to brush soon afterward to quickly remove the residual acids. Drinking plenty of water can also help keep your mouth clean when brushing isn’t immediately an option.
